Mark was simply the coolest guy I knew. That's why I'm glad he became Carter. It suits him far better, and like all things worth having, absolutely offers him a better ride. We had an ephemeral existence, thickened and made real by the creativity and caring that we could put into it. None of us had anchors, except those in our mother's and father's families. His spirituality was unquenchable. He loved music, nature, the puzzle Earth, peace, and poetry, particularly enigmatic poetry - - stuff you have to read and re-read to get its meaning, and to wear it's undoing like a floppy red hibiscus.
