From Kathy & Ed Jones It’s so hard for us to put our feelings for Carter into words. Carter was a big part of our family, a constant companion for us and we miss him terribly. Everything here at Four Brooks speaks of his presence – his signature is on everything that surrounds us. He loved making beautiful things for others. Carter loved Four Brooks. He said the view from his bungalow was the best on the property and he really enjoyed it. He and Ed planned the property renovations together, coming up with some wonderful ideas to make it a little different and interesting. Carter would draw out ideas and they would build them together. His work was wonderful – little touches here and there, with his signature of whimsy and fun – sometimes the result of his refusal to measure before sawing! Every morning at 6:30 he would come down from his place with his dog Rylee before heading to work. We would hear the pitter patter of Rylee’s feet on the deck, then Carter’s key in the door jingling the bells on the handle, and then Rylee’s feet again going into the house to lie down until we got up. We’re glad that Rylee was so used to us – now he lives with us and looks up the hill at the bungalow, waiting for his loving master to come home. It’s heartbreaking to watch him, but we’re giving him all the love we can. Carter ate dinner with us every night. Oh, how I’ll miss his compliments with every bite he took! He was a joy to cook for, and was a great cook himself. Jokes and puns were in abundance nightly at the dinner table. Whenever I’d go to New York to visit my mother, Carter would cook for Ed or they’d go to the Chinese buffet (their favorite stop). They really enjoyed eating out together. They often watched movies at home, and also went out to the movies frequently when I was out of town. Ed really misses his buddy, whom he spent most of his time with. I will miss hearing the howling laughter of Carter and Samantha watching America’s Funniest Home Videos and Jay Leno’s Monday night headlines together. Kubi, our bright orange tractor (Carter gave everything a name) sits silently on the hill, waiting for its driver – its seat as empty as our hearts right now. Oh, how we all miss that wonderfully quirky, gentle and unique man! Carter, we know that you are with God now. Now you know how much He has always loved you and has prepared a special place for you. We are so happy for you, and look forward to the heavenly family reunion someday. You and St. Joseph the Carpenter must have a lot of “shop-talk” to share! May you rest in peace, dear friend.
