1999 - 2003

Mark moved down to northwest Arkansas "temporarily" and ended up staying for four years. He & I (Samantha Jones) met at orientation at the Home Depot in the summer of 1999. When he was asked what name he wanted to go by at the Home Depot, he said "Carter." Some months later, I found out that "Carter" was not his first name. He told me his middle name was his mother's maiden name, and he had always wanted to be called "Carter." He worked in the electrical department at the Fayetteville, Arkansas Home Depot while running a construction company, Steele Wave, on the side. He moved up to Rogers, Arkansas, and took a job with Lowe's in their plumbing department. He continued his business, Steele Wave, doing remodeling & construction projects - all for friends & referrals. One of his projects was my home on Trust Street in Fayetteville. In 2002, we decided to become roommates, and he moved into my little bungalow. We transformed the house, especially by adding a beautiful front porch that we designed together. Our neighbors were thrilled. In 2003, he got a part-time job at Uncle Sam's Safari Outfitters, which he loved. The people were wonderful, and he still talked about him in the last months of his life. He acquired quite a collection of camping & hiking gear during his tenure there. To this day, his pack hangs just inside his front door. My parents, Kathy & Ed Jones, came for a visit, and told Carter about a property they purchased up in Pennsylvania - an old abandoned church camp ("Four Brooks") in Bucks County. Carter was intrigued. He played the shaky home videos of the camp repeatedly. We discussed it & decided I would sell my house. We would move up to the camp together and fix up the old piggery, which had been used as an infirmary for the camp until it closed in the eighties. He was excited.
